Celebrating National Public Health Week in Black Hawk County

Black Hawk County Public Health(BHPCH) is marking National Public Health Week April 3-9, with the theme “Celebrate Culture. Celebrate Health.”

Black Hawk County is a wonderfully diverse community rich in culture and language. However, locally and nationally, racial and ethnic minority populations continue to experience disparities in the burden of illness and death.

National Public Health Week is a time to recognize the work being done to improve health equity in the community. Black Hawk County Public Health relies on a dedicated staff of professionals who work hard to provide public health services as well as navigate individuals towards other local resources.

Both the Board of Health and the Board of Supervisors have approved a Proclamation recognizing the observance of National Public Health Week in Black Hawk County. Deputy Director Kaitlin Emrich said the annual observance is important to public health.  “Every year, we take time to celebrate National Public Health Week to recognize the work of public health professionals, provide education about the impact of those efforts, and share ways to continue to advance the health of our community through collaboration and innovation,” said Emrich. “We are excited and honored to share the important work of public health in our community.”

Building community connections is key to connecting with the people who live and work in Black Hawk County Activities for the “Celebrate Culture. Celebrate Health.” week include sharing information and services with the students at the HCC Adult Learning Center and the employees at Tyson Foods. BHCPH will also host a reception for local organizations to come together and discuss how using Community Health Workers or Navigators can help remove barriers to care and reduce health disparities.

The public is encouraged to follow Black Hawk County Public Health on Facebook and Instagram, for themed messaging during Public Health Week, and an opportunity to meet our “Public Health Heroes.”
