Food Safety Program

The Environmental Health Program is responsible for inspection, education, investigation and enforcement, of licensed food establishments in Black Hawk County as well as Benton, Buchanan, Bremer, Fayette and Grundy counties. The Black Hawk County Health Department contracts with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) to enforce the 2017 Food Code, its Supplements and the Iowa Administrative Code in our service area.

How to Open a New Establishment

When opening a new restaurant, as in all new ventures, it is critical to do your research. This is an important consideration and Black Hawk County Food Safety Inspection Officers are available to assist you with all physical and regulatory requirements with your new establishment. Please contact the Health Department with any questions you may have. Opening a new food establishment checklist:

  • Submit Plans to the Health Department 30 days prior to construction/remodel.
  • Adhere to Basic Requirements for Food Service.
  • Apply for a Food License.
