Care for Yourself - Breast and Cervical Cancer (BCC) Screening Program

The Care for Yourself – Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening program is part of a national effort to find breast and cervical cancers early. Early detection helps lower your risk. To reduce your risk, it’s important to get regular screening tests.

Our BCC services include free or low-cost cancer screenings for eligible individuals. Program staff can also help you schedule an appointment for clinical breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams, and Pap tests. Participants are often able to go to the provider and mammogram facility they choose.

Eligibility

  • Be a woman
  • Live in Black Hawk, Hardin, Grundy, Tama, Buchanan, or Fayette counties
  • Meet the program's net income guidelines (net income is the amount of money you bring home)
  • Citizenship is not required.
  • Have no insurance that covers these services, or have insurance with a deductible or co‑pay you cannot afford
  • Be due for breast and/or cervical cancer screenings

Income guidelines are updated annually and are valid through February 2027.

Colorectal Cancer Early Detection 

Black Hawk County Public Health works with Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and local healthcare providers in Black Hawk and nearby counties to increase colorectal cancer screenings. Program staff can also help you schedule a free or low-cost coloscopy or FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) screening to detect cancer early.  The goal is to prevent more cases of cancer by finding colorectal cancer sooner and reducing both the number of cases and deaths.

Eligibility

  • Be a man or woman between the ages of 45-75
  • Live in Iowa
  • Meet the program’s net income guidelines (net income is the amount of money you bring home)
  • Citizenship is not required.
  • Have no insurance that covers these services, or have insurance with a deductible or co‑pay you cannot afford
  • Be due for colorectal cancer screenings
