This weekly news brief provides updated information regarding the current status of COVID-19 vaccine efforts in Black Hawk County. Today Black Hawk County Public Health announced a Vaccine Incentive Program beginning June 11 and running through June 30.

Black Hawk County Public Health is launching the Black Hawk County Vaccine Incentive Program which includes a raffle of 20- $500 gift card baskets. To be eligible to win, recipients must be 18+, live in Black Hawk County, and get their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine between June 11- July 29. Four prizes will be drawn every Friday in July, beginning July 2. This incentive program aims to increase the current 58.2% vaccination rate (BHC residents age 18+) to 75% by July 29, 2021.

June is National Healthy Homes Month. This year's theme is The Power of Partnerships. The Black Hawk County Health Department is pleased to partner with Waterloo Community Development on the Healthy Homes Program. This Waterloo-based program consists of a series of in-home assessments, focusing on 29-health hazards, as well as a lead assessment.

Black Hawk County Public Health reports that Wednesday, May 12th, after a review from an independent federal advisory committee, the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine is recommended for use in adolescents aged 12-15. The FDA and CDC have approved this recommendation.

The Black Hawk County Health Department reports that the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed two cases of the COVID-19 variant, SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617 in Iowa. This variant is also referred to as the India variant because it was first detected there. We are still learning about the characteristics of this strain.
