Black Hawk County Public Health Now Offering Free Naloxone
In recognition of National Prevention Week, Black Hawk County Public Health is announcing that community members can now pick up free naloxone kits from our office during regular business hours. Naloxone is a lifesaving medicine that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose, including overdoses involving heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications.
Kits are available at our front desk at 1407 Independence Avenue, 1st Floor, Waterloo, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No appointment is needed.
Naloxone can save a life in minutes, and everyone in our community can play a role in preventing overdose deaths. Keeping naloxone on hand, just like a first aid kit, is an easy way to be prepared for an emergency.
Naloxone is safe, easy to use, and does not require medical training. When you pick up a kit, a trained public health staff member will show you how to administer naloxone and answer any questions you may have.
Naloxone can be safely given to people of all ages, from infants to older adults, including children who may have accidentally taken prescription opioid medication.
“Anyone in our community could one day be in a position to save a life,” said Public Health Director Kaitlin Emrich. “Carrying naloxone means you are ready to help someone, whether it’s a friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or even a stranger.”
By picking up a naloxone kit, you are taking a small but powerful step to be ready to help someone in need.
